From time to time, and in various jurisdictions where my observations or opinions may be useful, I have served as an expert witness, consultant, or ethics advisor (mostly directly to other attorneys in representing their own clients) on issues of legal ethics and professional responsibility, conflicts of interest, bar discipline, and legal malpractice. I am available as a special master or hearing officer in courts for such ethical or disciplinary matters, and currently serve under one such appointment by a federal court. I have also consulted on matters related to appellate standards of review, particularly in civil cases. Such jurisdictions have included such rules-based states as Illinois, Texas, and Louisiana, and the District of Columbia, as well as the code-influenced state of California.
